Occupational Health - Health Professional Programmes
Pre entry Students
If you're about to become a student on one of the following professional programmes:
- BSc (Hons) Nursing
- BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography
- BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy
- MSc Occupational Therapy
- MA Art Therapy
- MA Dramatherapy
- Or a NHS Research student
You are required to complete a health screening programme in preparation for your clinical placements. This includes:
- Vaccination programme
- Health questionnaire
Vaccination programme - To prevent unnecessary vaccinations you are required to submit written evidence of any vaccinations and any blood tests you have already had for
- Hepatitis B
- MMR (Mumps, Measles and Rubella)
- Varicella (Chickenpox)
- BCG (TB vaccination)
This evidence should be obtained from your GP practice (ask the receptionist for a computer printout). If you have previously worked for the NHS contact your NHS occupational health department for a copy of your immunisations and submit both prior to starting your programme.
The health questionnaire will be sent to you in an email (email address submitted on UCAS form)once a confirmed offer has been made. This is a confidential health questionnaire which is assessed by the health team. Any issues arising from this questionnaire will be discussed with you, medical evidence requested and an appointment made.
A schedule of screening appointments will be arranged to enable you to have all the vaccinations and tests you still need for your clinical placement.
» Why do I need health screening?
Health screening is the standard set by the Department of Health for students who have clinic placement.
Health screening is concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of students who have clinical placements. This looks at the effect of your clinical placement on your health and provides protection for you and your clients.

» Health Screening appointments?
Your initial health screening will take place within the first couple weeks of you starting your programme.
Unless we have received written evidence of your immunisations (provided by GP Practice, Occupational Health or School of Health) we will provide the following:
- Hepatitis B in your upper arm
- MMR (measles,mumps and rubella) in your upper arm
- Tuberculosis (TB) skin test in your lower left arm
- Blood test to check for varicella (chickenpox) antibodies
Please help us to avoid administering unnecessary vaccinations by providing us with up to date information.

» Research passports
The NHS Research Passport system establishes a common system of pre-engagement checks, which conform to the standards required of all NHS bodies and are therefore transferable across NHS Trusts.
Research students studying at the University of Derby who require a research passport should contact the the Student Health Department for an appointment to see the medical officer. The Medical Officer will carry out an assessment to the student is fit for research activities.

The Student Wellbeing Service is here to support you through your time in university.If at any point during your programme you have a significant change in health you need to be re-assessed by the health team, a change may include-
pregnancy, a new diagnosis or medical condition(short or longterm), exacerbation of previously declared health condition,mental health concerns
To be re-assessed you will need to book an appointment with a health practitioner by contacting wellbeing reception, ground floor T Block.
