Colds

The common cold is a mild, viral infection that usually gets better by itself without any treatment.

Symptoms of a cold can include

  • nasal stuffiness
  • runny nose
  • sneezing
  • sore throat
  • cough

A cold cannot be treated by antibiotics. You can, however, help by looking after yourself, resting, drinking plenty of fluids and eating healthily.

You can find more information about colds and how to treat them on the NHS Choices website and in the Battle Against Cold and Flu leaflet.

It is usually not necessary to seek medical help for a cold. The NHS Choices website provides information about those occasions when you should consult your doctor.
