Diabetes

Sugar falling onto spoon

Diabetes is a long-term condition caused by too much glucose, a type of sugar, in the blood.

The main symptoms of diabetes are:

  • feeling very thirsty
  • going to the toilet a lot, especially at night
  • extreme tiredness
  • weight loss and muscle wasting (loss of muscle bulk)

You can help reduce your chances of getting diabetes if you exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, do not smoke and only drink alcohol in moderation.

It is important to diagnose diabetes as early as possible so that treatment can be started. If you experience symptoms, see your GP as soon as possible.

You can find more information about diabetes, its causes, treatment and how to prevent it on the NHS Choices website.

Students with diabetes living in our halls of residence can be supplied with a mini-fridge for your medication and a sharps bin in which to dispose your needles. Please speak to your hall manager about this.
