Concerned about a family member

It can be difficult to concentrate on your academic work and student life if you are concerned about someone at home. While we may not be able to make the problem at home go away, we can provide some useful advice and guidance and may be able to help you find ways to manage the situation better.

  • Accessing counselling and simply talking about what has been happening can often ease the burden. Your counsellor can also work with you to develop strategies for managing the impact the problem is having on you. You can make an appointment to see a counsellor on 01332 593000
  • If you are concerned that someone at home may present a risk to themselves or others or that a child is at risk of abuse, we can contact and work with your local social services to make sure they are safe. Make an appointment to see a member of the Student Wellbeing Team on 01332 593000
  • If the problem at home is impacting upon your parents \ carers ability to financially support you, we can offer financial guidance and maybe able to offer you some financial support via the Access to Learning Fund.
  • If someone at home has been diagnosed with a mental illness and you are not sure what this means you can discuss your concerns with us in the Student Wellbeing Service. We will be able to provide some general information on mental health and common mental illnesses. Or you could visit one of these websites

  • If the problem is impacting on your course work you should explain the situation to your lecturer. They may be able to extend some deadlines for you or arrange an Extenuating Circumstances Form.
