Fancy cocktails? The Monk Cellar offers the best Mojitos in Buxton and hosts a South American night every Thursday evening.

If dancing the night away is more your thing, then Buxton's nightclub, Level 2, is open until late five nights a week, playing everything from chart and dance to cheesy music.

And our Students' Union organises some great student nights in Buxton:

  • On Wednesdays visit the Spa Bar for the biggest mid-week themed student party.
  • The Vault has great drinks offers and is famous for its regular student and poker nights.

In the summer, Buxton gets 'festival fever', hosting lots of festivals including the Buxton Festival, Fringe Theatre Festival and The Four Four Time Festival of Live Music.

Regular gigs take place most nights somewhere in Buxton. Pubs and bars, such as The Orchestra Pit, host live music nights with a range of styles from jazz and soul to acoustic sessions by musicians from the Buxton area.

Eating out

You'll find lots of places to eat in Buxton, with all sorts of food on offer, including Italian, Indian, Chinese and Thai, as well as well-known names like Pizza Express, Subway and Wetherspoons. And of course, there are lots of late night take away places.

Come and try out Russi - an Indian restaurant that's new to Buxton. There's a loyalty scheme for takeaways and student discounts if you eat in.

There's a variety of coffee shops too. The Source Cafe is a warm and friendly place to meet friends, or you could try the delicious freshly baked muffins and big cups of fresh coffee in Project X.

Shopping

As well as familiar high street names like New Look, Dorothy Perkins and Game, there are some great individual shops selling everything from local food to designer clothes.

In the Cavendish Arcade, you'll find shops selling crafts, fashion, antiques, books and the popular Pizza Express.

Buxton has markets every Tuesday and Saturday, plus a monthly Farmers' Market and an annual international market with traders from all over the world.

But if you're short of a real shopping fix, the Trafford Centre in Manchester is only about an hour away. With a 1,600 seat food court, a 20-screen cinema and hundreds of high street and designer stores, it's easy to spend the day here.

There's also Westfield Derby which has over 190 stores, a cinema and a large food court.

The outdoors and day trips

Buxton's on the edge of the Peak District National Park with moorland, woodland, hills and the popular tourist towns of Ashbourne, Bakewell and Matlock are nearby.

So if you're into activities like rock climbing, horse riding, pot holing, paragliding or water sports you'll be in your element. And there are some great places to visit nearby including Alton Towers, the biggest theme park in the UK, Chatsworth, the caverns in Castleton and Go Ape!, a trek through treetops via Tarzan swings, zip slides and rope bridges up to 35 feet above the forest floor.
