From forensics to production planning
My course is great. I'm currently in the second year and enjoying it immensely. The area of computing I've been studying is computer forensics. It's a very exciting and new field. This year in maths, we've covered some decision mathematics in the module Management Science, as well as statistical analysis in the module Stats Techniques. The highlight of the second year has to be the Maths Group Project - an interesting module involving links with a local Derby business. Our project centred around a production planning problem, working with data from Bosch Thermotechnic, part of the Worcester Bosch group.
Would I recommend Derby?
Absolutely! Derby is an awesome university both due to the friendliness of its staff and students, and the opportunities they provide.
Opportunities to earn some cash, and enhance my confidence
The University has it's own Student Employment Agency. I currently have a part time job working with the organisation Aimhigher, as well as working for the University as a student ambassador. I also work at the Faculty of Business, Computing and Law Maths Clinics as a Maths Study Advisor, and have recently taken up working as a Maths Support Assistant helping students on the Access programme.
All these opportunities have been made available to me by the University, and have developed my confidence, communication and teaching skills, as well as paid me a wage.
