National Student Survey

National Student Survey logo

The National Student Survey (NSS) gives final year students the opportunity to let us know what they think about their course and overall learning experience at Derby.

What is the NSS?

The NSS is a nationally run survey, and asks students for their opinions on:

  • the teaching on their course
  • assessment and feedback on their work
  • academic support available
  • organisation and management of their course
  • learning resources available
  • how their course has helped personal development

How is the feedback used?

This feedback is used:

  • by us, to understand how students feel about different aspects of their experience at Derby, which leads to improvements and changes
  • nationally - the results contribute to newspaper league tables and are available online for prospective students to view, at www.unistats.com

The changes that have been made as a result of both the NSS and Feedback, our internal satisfaction survey, are displayed on our 'You said it. We did it' pages.

Can only final year students take part?

The NSS is aimed at final year students, however the University's Feedback campaigns campaigns are open to all students to let us know what they think about their course.

How is the NSS conducted?

The National Student Survey is carried out by Ipsos MORI on behalf of Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Final year undergraduate students are contacted by Ipsos MORI in January and invited to fill in the survey online. Students who have not responded will then be contacted by post and telephone.

Students are not required to complete the survey and may opt out if they wish to do so, however we encourage all students to take part and let us know how they feel.
