As a Programme Leader I am keen to ensure that colleagues bring their own real world and practitioner experience to all the teaching that we do. As a lecturer I ensure that my materials are relevant, up to date and appropriate to the Students that I am with, facilitating their learning. There are many synergies to share between our employed Students, from a wide variety of sectors, and our international Students who can reflect on business and management, brands and organisations, both in their own countries as well as from a more global perspective ~ all Students can then inform each other and that shared knowledge, from all the market places lends itself to a rich learning landscape for all involved.  

Teaching responsibilities

I take responsibility for delivering quite a wide range of modules but all with variations around strategy and marketing themes and across all levels from undergraduate year one (Level 4) through to postgraduate (Level 7). The same module can be delivered to full time, mainly international Students, as well as to part-time Students, employed locally, as well as to in-company delegates. Each experience is very different even if the central discipline and frameworks are the same, so the trick is to be empathetic and motivational, to get the best out of your Students, always.

Research interests

I am a marketing person and inveterate observer  of strategy through and through and these are the subject areas that inform most of my scholarly activities and provide much of the currency to my teaching. Having been a manager in marketing at all levels, associated with many interesting brands from garden machinery to cosmetics to medicines to industrials, I follow many, many brands and a good number of companies. Since marketing is integral in developing marketing and corporate strategies there are a wide number of companies that I follow, their business models, their innovations, their paradigm shifts and game-changings. 

Additional interests and activities

Fortunately it is integral to my day job that I am passionate about the Far Eastern economies and cultures and, within that, especially China, because we will never see the like of such a change again in our lifetimes. Therefore I am linked to the East Midlands China Business Bureau and to the equivalent Indian Bureau for professional networking and links.

As for a list of other interests/passions, in no particular order; Brands/advertising, Alfa Romeo, the Lake District and Derbyshire, Wolverhampton Wanderers, music of all sorts, informed newspapers, the internet. I could go on...
