About

I am Programme Leader of the MSc Management and the Senior Leader's Master's Degree Apprenticeship, and Senior Lecturer at the University of Derby. My areas of teaching expertise are Business Consultancy, Project Management, Strategy and Research Methods and I teach at all levels: undergraduate, postgraduate, apprenticeship and corporate learning. My area of research interest is the application and adaptation of management models and theories to different working contexts and I’ve co-written a book and have a couple of other publications too!  I supervise postgraduate research level.

Teaching responsibilities

I am a Module Leader for the undergraduate module The Business Consultancy Project. My postgraduate modules include Leading Strategy for the MSc Level 7 Apprenticeship Senior Leaders programme.  I run a number of advanced skills workshops for corporate partners.

Professional interests

I have 16 years of experience in management, in a variety of private and public sector organisations. I am also an experienced trainer and consultant, able to work with organisations to effectively identify gaps in policy, processes and planning and offer workable solutions to make improvements, as well as recommending and carrying out appropriate staff training and development activities.

Prior to working for Derby Business School, I was the Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Events Management programme at the University of Derby, Buxton, combining my management experience with my events management experience at various organisations.

Research interests

My PhD is titled: 'A Conceptualisation of Management Based on the Lived Experience of Hospitality Managers and Employees' My research interests are around a deeper understanding of the philosopy of management, the similarities and differences of management practice across different sectors, business ethics in turbulent times, and the challenges faced by employees in the transition of specialist to manager.

Experience in industry

After graduation, I worked in management positions. I worked for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (1997-2001), the Medical Research Council (2002-2004) and the University of Derby (2004-2012). I launched my own training and consultancy business in 2006, and provide training, development and consultancy services to a number of clients including medical registrars, managers in the police force, supervisors and managers in a steel company, small/owner-managed businesses in North Derbyshire and the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

I'm an expert in strategic planning and project management (including events management), and operational management.  I'm also a recognised expert in managing university "clearing" operations and major change and restructuring projects.

International experience

I work with the University's collaborative partners in Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, Spain and Greece.
