Professional interests
I joined the University in 2011 after almost 20 years at Northumbria University in Newcastle, where I was Dean of the School of Law. My first degree was in English, and I worked for the Citizens Advice Bureau Service in London for almost a decade before qualifying as a solicitor and working for a leading human rights law practice in London. When I started at Northumbria I remained in practice as a lawyer but retrained as a barrister, specialising in human rights and public law. I remain a door tenant at ParkLane Plowden, a leading civil chambers in the North East.
I was appointed as a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2005 - and I have been closely associated with the development of clinical legal education in the UK, and in building up an international network of legal clinicians, centring on the International Journal of Clinical Legal Education, which I edited for many years. My research interests have been based in criminal law and practice, and in legal education and pedagogic practice. I also have an interest in the developing field of privacy law and freedom of information.
Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees
I am the academic member of the Criminal Law Committee of the Law Society of England and Wales, and a member of the Law Society's Education and Training Committee. I also sit on the Attorney General's Pro Bono Committee.
