Nik has obtained his BA from the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Athens and completed his PhD and MA at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK.

Prior to his Professorship appointment at the School of Computing and Mathematics, he joined the Department of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Bedfordshire as a Lecturer in 2001. In 2004 he was promoted to Senior Lecturer and the Postgraduate Course Manager and in 2009, he was promoted to a Principal Lecturer and took on the role of MSc Project co-ordination and University Extended Degrees Course Management. In December 2010, he joined the University of Derby as a Professor of Computer Science and led the research within the School. He is also a member of the University Court.

Since january 2011, Professor Bessis is the Head of the Distributed and Intelligent Systems (DISYS) research group and the REF UOA11 Leader.

Research interests

As a researcher, Nik exploits emerging data computational and collective intelligence methods and services in distributed environments such in grids, inter-clouds, smart environments and Internet of Things (IoT). These have a particular focus on various organizational settings such as in disaster management. Specific research keywords include web-centric system developments; dynamic web applications; data integration; user-led developments; social networking; crowds; personalized data push; massive data; data analytics and visualization and resource management (discovery and scheduling). Notable contributions include models in resource optimization through dynamic rooting protocols, advanced energy efficient message exchange (MEO), dynamic virtualization, critical friend resource discovery and scheduling methods. Nik has published over 165 works and he has received 3 Best Papers Awards (2009, 2009 and 2012).
