I was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor in February 2010.

I have a strategic lead for:

  • learning and teaching
  • quality enhancement
  • employer engagement.

My role incorporates responsibility for two faculties: Arts, Design and Technology; and Education, Health and Sciences and the departments for Learning Enhancement and Innovation, and Marketing.

At the University of Derby we aim to provide a quality education for application ensuring that our students are equipped for the world of work through a diverse range of courses, acknowledging the diverse needs and experience of our students.

It is my responsibility to ensure that our students' learning experience provides a range of opportunities to develop and enhance their skills and knowledge facilitating their entry to, and/or progression in, their careers.

Professional interests

My career in Higher Education has been focused upon the development of learning and teaching, recognised in 1998 when I was appointed as the first Teaching Fellow at Teeside University. Previously I was the Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Law at Teeside University where I had worked for 23 years in previous roles including Deputy Dean of Health and Social Care and leading a University wide 2 year project 'Managing Diversity'. I started my career as a Secondary School teacher in Staffordshire, where I originally completed my school education.

Research interests

My research interests have primarily focused around Higher Education specifically around the student learning experience, workforce development and e-learning.

Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees

I have retained a contact with Teeside joining their Students' Union Board as a Trustee.

I am a QAA Institutional auditor, and through this experience I have gained a wide knowledge of quality assurance and enhancement, and developments across the sector.
