Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Design and Technology, which comprises the School of Art and Design, the School of Humanities and the School of Technology.

Professional interests

  • Creative Industries Education. Professional practice as filmmaker, curator and programmer.
  • Co-Artistic Director and Chair of Board, Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland (since 2004) www.berwickfilm-artsfest.com
  • Board member and Trustee of various arts and cultural organisations including: QUAD Arts, Derby; UK Young Artists; Derby Theatre. Chair of Steering Group for Format International Photography Festival.

Selection panel member of 'Exposure' section of Format International Photography Festival since 2009.

Current research

Curating 'Artists Trail' element of Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival 2011 and 2012.

'The Films of the Jackson & Milne Archives 1924-2005'. Current research on two major collections of family home movies filmed in the Borders, Edinburgh and Glasgow over a period of 80 years. I have been working with the Scottish Screen Archive and National Libraries of Scotland since 2008. Interviewed by STV, Tyne Tees TV, BBC Radio Scotland and The Scotsman in relation to this work in September 2010.

Contribution to 'Photocinema: Working at the Creative Edges of Photography and Film': (ed. Neil Campbell and Alfredo Camerotti for Intellect) currently preparing two sections for forthcoming book.

Additional Interests and Activities

I joined the University in November 2007, having previously held teaching, research and management positions at a number of universities and colleges in the UK and USA over a 20-year period. Prior to taking up post at Derby I was Head of the School of Creative Industries at Napier University, Edinburgh, which included the Skillset accredited, Screen Academy Scotland and the Ian Tomlin School of Music.

I have extensive experience as external examiner and validation/review panel member for over 20 UK universities, including international work for the University of Wales and the Open University in China, India, Russia, Malaysia, Thailand and various EU countries.
