Faculty: Education, Health and Sciences

School: School of Health and Social Care

Subject Area: Radiography

I have been working within radiography at the University of Derby for 3 years now, initially beginning my career in teaching as a Lecturer Practitioner, though I have recently taken on the role of Placement Co-ordinator. I work at the university 3 days a week and continue to work clinically as a Senior I Radiographer the remaining two days which enables me to remain aware of current clinical practice and maintain my clinical experience.

Teaching responsibilities

I am a module leader for the 2nd and 3rd year students' Clinical and Professional Skills modules. I also have teaching responsibilities on the Foundation Clinical and Professional Skills module. My teaching is mainly with small groups in our x-ray facility in the clinical skills suite, where students can practice their skills in a safe and controlled environment. The lectures that I perform are all on topics related to radiographic technique and clinical practice in order to thoroughly prepare students for their first clinical placement.

Professional interests

CT is a modality I am particularly interested in. I spend part of my clinical role working in CT and have extended my role to include intravenous injections.

I am also interested in placement learning and ways of helping students apply theory to practice in the clinical environment.

Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees

  • Society of Radiographers
  • Health Professions Council

Media experience

I was recently on BBC East Midlands Today alongside members of the Radiography team talking about the 1st year students being issued with i-pods for use whilst on clinical placement. The i-pods have the radiographic technique DVD downloaded onto them which was produced here at the University of Derby. It includes video footage and graphic animations with commentary on plain film radiographic techniques and is a fantastic resource.

Undergraduate qualifications

  • Diploma of the College of Radiographers, Nottingham School of Radiography, 1991

Postgraduate qualifications

  • I am currently working towards my Post Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teac, University of Derby
