I am a broadcast journalist by profession and still work within the industry.
Faculty: Arts, Design and Technology
School: School of Humanities
Subject Area: Media
As a working journalist, I teach part time at the University as an Associate Lecturer in Journalism and Media Studies, drawing on the wealth of experience and contacts I've gained in print and broadcasting over the past 20 years.
I started my career in newspapers as a trainee for the Derby Evening Telegraph, where I gained the NCTJ National Certificate and won the National Esso Award.
During seven years with the publication, I worked as a general reporter, the crime reporter and finally the news editor before leaving to freelance for a number of national newspapers namely The Sun and the Daily Star.
In 1997 I joined Yorkshire Television, now known as ITV Yorkshire, as an on-screen reporter for the tea-time regional news programme Calendar. I covered numerous big regional stories, many of which were also featured on ITN, such as the floods in 2007 and the trial of Colin Norris, a nurse convicted of killing hospital patients in Leeds for which I won an ITV news award.
During my twelve years with Calendar, I was also known to produce the programme and on occasions present it. I've also produced and presented a variety of regional and network documentaries. I've reported for the former GMTV and spent time on secondment with ITN.
I'm currently a freelance correspondent for ITV, appearing regularly on Central Tonight, across the Midlands, and on Daybreak.
I've been teaching at the University of Derby since January 2010. I'm currently studying for the Post Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. Successful completion of this I will become a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
