Assistant Programme Leader and Senior Lecturer in Education Studies
Teaching responsibilities
I have responsibility for leading the following modules: Curriculum Frameworks at Level 5, The Changing Educational Landscape at Level 5, Curriculum Corruption and Construction at Level 6 and Educational Independent Study at Level 6.
I am the Academic Progression Leader for the Education Studies programme, as well as the Assistant Programme Leader.
Professional interests
I graduated with a BEd (Movement Specialist) from Liverpool John Moore's University in 1994. I took up my first teaching post in Derby at a large inner city primary school where I eventually became the Head of Early Years and Key Stage 1. I have taught across the full primary age range in a variety of schools across Derby. I moved to the University of Derby in 2003 to work in Initial Teacher Education where I was the Programme Leader for the Primary Education course. I have taught in primary schools in the Gambia and in the Teacher Training College for Gambian teachers, and have taken students on trips to the Gambia to widen their experiences. I have been a visiting lecturer at the Central School for Speech and Drama leading workshops which explore 'Mantle of the Expert' as a holistic approach to teaching and learning. In 2008 I was approached by the Director of Curriculum, at QCDA and was asked to work with the Primary Review team, with Sir Jim Rose writing the new primary curriculum. This offered me the opportunity to work in policy making, advising central government on curriculum ideologies and additionally to lead a national research project looking at the impact of new curricula ideas on learning. Now as a Senior Lecturer in Education Studies I lead a range of modules that explore the changing educational landscape, curriculum design and behaviour management.
Research interests
I was involved in a COMENIUS project from 2006 - 2009 'Kleine Helden in Not' or 'Small Heroes in Trouble' which focussed on Boys in Education from a European perspective. This project grew from a small piece of regional research, to a wide scale project working with 12 European countries leading to several publications, a practical teaching course and a website.
I have additional interests in the Arts in Education, behaviour management and curriculum design where I have published book and chapters.
International Experience
I am currently working with an international reserach group where we are exploring Education and Gender. The research considers how young people, aged 12 - 16, construct their gender identities and how these compare from a range of perspectives with the different countries involved.
