I am currently the External Examiner for London Metropolitan University for the BA in Education Studies.
Faculty: Education, Health and Sciences
School: School of Education
Subject Area: Education Studies
Programme Leader: BA Education Studies
Teaching responsibilities
As the Programme Leader for BA Education Studies I have responsibility for planning and leading the programme. I also have leadership responsibilities for the following modules: Independent Studies (Level 3), and Learning and Motivation (Level 3) and Analysing Communications. I also supervise a range of Independent Studies.
Professional interests
I graduated in 1980 from the University of Sussex, and completed a PGCE in 1982. This provided me with the opportunity to work across secondary, tertiary and higher education sectors. I have held a range of teaching and management roles.
These include: working in the sixth form sector delivering and managing A levels in Sociology, Psychology and Communications. I have been an Assistant Examiner for both AQA and Edexcel in Sociology and Psychology.
I have had a wide range of responsibility for both leadership and management of A level and Access provision. Whilst working at High Pavement Sixth Form College in Nottingham I lead teams through a series of successful Ofsted inspections, achieving an Outstanding in Social Science provision.
My experience in higher education started with teaching a range of Open University modules to mature students over a period of seven years. In addition I have been involved in a range of widening participation projects with Nottingham, Nottingham Trent and the University of Derby. More recently I was the Project Leader at University of Derby for the FACE IT project (Focus on Awareness of Culture and Education for International Teachers), which involved working with Edith Stein in Hengelo and a number of Europeans partners to produce teacher training materials for International Leaders. As a consequence, the BA in Education Studies now runs a successful Erasmus exchange programme to Edith Stein.
I completed my MA in 2008 on Student Transitions to Higher Education from the University of Derby. I have recently extended this research with my participation in the Flying Start project, which was a joint HEA project with the University of Derby and Liverpool Hope.
I subsequently joined the BA Education Studies team at the University of Derby and became Programme Leader. I hold responsibility for the planning, development and delivery of the programme. Additionally, I am the module leader for the following modules at Stage 3: Independent Studies, Learning and Motivation and Analysing Communications.
I am currently the External Examiner for London Metropolitan University for the BA in Education Studies.
Research interests
My research interests lie in the learning experiences of young people as they transition, from Level 3 study, (A Level and Diploma) to 4 (Higher Education).
I have recently completed the Flying Start project which explored the study skills and preparedness of students who were completing Level 3 study as they thought about and planned for their Level 4 study.

Project Leader at University of Derby for the FACE IT project (Focus on Awareness of Culture and Education for International Teachers), working with Edith Stein in Hengelo and a number of Europeans partners to produce teacher training materials for International Leaders.
