Experience in Industry
I moved into the academic world after working in industry for approx 20 years. I was a Graduate Trainee in Employee Relations in British Steel, working both in Teesside and at London Head Office. I have also worked in the Civil Service, Local Government and in the private sector as an Employee Relations Manager. I have also undertaken consultancy work in organisations.
Department: Postgraduate and Professional
Faculty: Business, Computing and Law
School: Derby Business School
Subject Area: Human Resource Management
I am the Assistant Subject Head for the Leadership and Organisation subject group which covers staff who deliver in the areas of HRM, HRD, Coaching, Leadership, Organisational Behaviour Business Skills and Research. I also lead and teach on a variety of HR related modules, mainly at postgraduate level.
Supporting the Faculty and School vision
I am involved in the development of new initiatives, programmes, courses and workshops that deliver to students and customers on a world wide basis a meaningful framework for vocational and professional development and progression. I am involved with students from a variety of backgrounds and work within a traditional university environment. I also work in-company, with specific professional body requirements, on bespoke programmes and also develop and deliver on-line modules and activities.
My aim is to ensure that students challenge themselves and their own pre-conceptions and are encouraged and inspired to aim higher in their professional lives through developing the knowledge and skills learnt in an engaging educational forum that is simultaneously academically rigorous and applied in practice. This means that I am very involved in developing the research agenda and activities for the members of the subject group, Leadership and Organisations and ensuring that staff development is aimed at achieving the best for our students and customers. A positive student experience is central to the aims of the subject group and this is achieved through ensuring the right staff are involved in programme and module delivery. As part of this we also need to ensure that our students understand their own responsibilities within this process and this again is an important element of ensuring the Business School's vision for its students can be met.
Teaching responsibilities
As Assistant Subject Head I am involved in the development of the subject group and its growing portfolio of offerings here in Derby, within the UK and internationally. The development of the subject group's research agenda and the resourcing of various modules and programmes are also part of my remit.
Teaching responsibilities
I am a Programme Leader with responsibility for programmes in particular that are affiliated to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and specifically those that are run on a part time basis. In the main I cover modules that have strong leadership, management and employee perspectives, especially those at the postgraduate level. I have current module leadership responsibilities for Leading Managing and Developing People, Investigating a Business Issue from and HR Perspective, Strategic Human Resource Management. I also teach on Managing the Dynamic Organisation, Performance Management and facilitate Independent Studies
