Senior Lecturer in Education Studies/Faculty Disability Coordinator
Teaching responsibilities
As a Senior Lecturer in Education Studies I have responsibility for leading the following modules: Specific Learning Difficulties (stage two), and Managing Special Educational Needs (stage three). I also supervise a range Independent Studies. I am currently Chair of the University Disability Group and Faculty Disability Coordinator.
Professional interests
Having taught in the Further Education Sector for in excess of ten years, I graduated with a BA Honours in Applied Studies and English at the University of Derby, following which I gained Graduate Teacher Status. This provided me with the opportunity to work in a school setting, in my specialist area of teaching Special Educational Needs. I subsequently joined the University of Derby as a Senior Lecturer where I obtained my Masters in Education. I am currently working towards my Doctorate in Education which focuses on the issues of Dyslexia in Higher Education. Whilst employed at the University of Derby, I have lead and lectured on a variety of modules across the Education Studies undergraduate programme, leading modules on Specific Learning Difficulties and Managing Special Educational Needs, Research Methods and Teaching, Learning and the Curriculum. I have also been involved in developing and delivering a bespoke undergraduate programme for a local company who employ staff to care for children and young people with special educational needs.
Research interests
My research considers the issues faced by dyslexic students whilst studying towards an undergraduate programme in higher education and also staff awareness of this complex learning difficulty, drawing on the work of David Pollak, an expert in the field of Dyslexia and Higher Education.
