Teaching responsibilities

I teach into several UG and PG programmes including Photography and Fine Art and MA Still and Moving Image, I supervise at both MPhil and PhD levels. I have taught at these levels since joining the University in 1997

Professional interests

I am particularly interested in all aspects of curriculum development and programme design and management. My chief area is around the subject of 'creativity' and how we ensure that the student is enabled as self-motivated and creatively independent practitioner. This is evidenced through how we deliver programmes and how we enable students to respond imaginatively to both given briefs and negotiated personal development leading to a sound and grounded creative independence.

Research interests

I studied Fine Art at Birmingham in the 1970s and Art and Psychotherapy at Sheffield in the 1990s.

My main interests are around the ephemeral aspects of self, coping with a dystopian psyche and how these impact on daily life and personal relationships which are evidenced through figurative, narrative paintings.

I have been a practicing painter since graduating in 1975

International Experience

I have worked internationally since the late 1990s in Education, Arts Festivals, Exhibitions and Conferences including: Greece, Belgium, Russia, New York, Kazakhstan and Holland

Media experience

I have been interviewed and performed on BBC Radio Derby with the most recent being around the subject of Graffiti and the question of - is it Art.

I also performed a song that was written at the MASTERCLASS Arts Festival in St Petersburg, Russia ahead of the Tengri-Umai Arts Festival in Kazakhstan where I exhibited, gave a lecture on the use of the visual image in the Therapeutic Arts, facilitated a series of workshops for Artists and Arts Therapists, performed in concert and wrote and performed a song dedicated to the festival at the closing event. I also gave a television interview and appeared in the Almaty press.
