Professional interests
I have been an avid mountaineer and climber for many years with a range of experience in both this country, Europe and North America. It was my skill in this environment that guided me to work within the outdoor industry.
Having worked for a number of years as an outdoor trainer, instructor and facilitator, the opportunity arose to undertake a sports science degree at the University College of North Wales, Bangor. My interests were specifically in skilled performance and sport psychology with a preference for applying this to climbing.
NBG qualifications: ML Summer, SPA, MIA Trg, First Aid
Research interests
After my degree I was fortunate to obtain a teaching scholarship to undertake a Masters of Science degree at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada. During this time my research looked at skilled performance and the differences between novice and expert climbers. I also worked with the local climbing community in Nova Scotia to set up and deliver a curriculum for the teaching climbing, in both winter and summer.
Recent Conferences
Speaking at the 2010 Outdoors Show
Additional Interests and Activities
After returning from Canada I worked with children with behavioral problems in a private school, both as a careworker and manager. I helped deliver and develop an outdoor program for the students, working closely with colleagues on changing clients behaviors and developing their self-worth. During this time I also undertook a Masters of Philosophy at Lancaster University in their Psychology Department, researching novice, expert differences in movement imagery and the perceptions of rock climbers.
