Experience in Industry
I am a qualified and registered Social Worker. I worked as a social worker for eight years before being promoted to Service Manager for the Adoption service for Derby City Council. I left this post to take on the role of Senior Project Manager in Children's Services before coming to work for the University of Derby.

I am the Head of Subject for Integrated Professional Studies. In addition to myrole as Subject Head I teach on a number of programmes including Social Work andSocial Care. I regularly work with partner organizations in developing anddelivering short courses on topics such as Ethics and Advocacy for interpretersas well as Attitudes and Values for staff working in special school settings. Currently I Chair and coordinate the Faculty's Service User and Carer Forum.
Teaching responsibilities
I have a range of teaching interests. These include; Social Policy, Social Work Law, Values and Ethics and Human Growth and Development Theories.
Professional interests
My particular areas of interest focus on Adoption and Fostering as well as generalissues relating to working with Children and Families and Safeguarding. I alsohave a particular interest in Management theory.
Research interests
I have several research interests. I have carried out research focusing on theimpact of involving service users and carers in HE programmes. I have alsoworked with a Local Authority looking at improving services for children in thecare system and care leavers. My current research as part of my Doctoratefocuses on Adoption of Children. Specifically, how adoptive parents perceivethe adoption process.

I'm a member of several professional bodies. I'm a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). I'm registered with the General Social Care Council (GSCC). I am also a member of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW).

I have worked with the Participation Officer from Derby City Council and Young People in Care to develop a DVD focusing on Effective Communication with Children in Care.
