Recent publications

I've published an article in the University's Response magazine focusing on good practice when working with People Who Use Services And Their Carers.

Experience in Industry

I am a qualified and registered Social Worker. I worked as a social worker for eight years before being promoted to Service Manager for the Adoption service for Derby City Council. I left this post to take on the role of Senior Project Manager in Children's Services before coming to work for the University of Derby.

Subject Area: Social Care

I am the Assistant Head of Subject in the subject area of Applied Social and Community Studies. In addition to my role as an Assistant Subject Head I teach on a number of programmes including Social Work and Social Care. I regulalry work with partner organisations in developing and delivering short courses on topics such as Ethics and Advocacy for interpreters as well as Attitudes and Values for staff working in special school settings. Currently I chair and coordinate the Faculty's Service User and Carer Forum.

Teaching responsibilities

I'm module leader for several modules on the BA (Hons) Applied Social Work Programme including; Social Work Law, Social Policy, Attitudes and Values, Social Work with Children and Young People, Human Growth and Development. I also have input on other programmes on topics that include Child Protection, Fostering and Adoption and Management.

Professional interests

My particular areas of interest focus on Adoption and Fostering as well as general issues relating to working with Children and Families and Safeguarding. I also have a particular interest in Managment theory.

Research interests

I have several research interests. I have carried out research focusing on the impact of involving service users and carers in HE programmes. I have also worked with a Local Authority looking at improving services for children in the care system and care leavers.

Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees

I'm a member of several professional bodies. I'm a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). I'm registered with the General Social Care Council (GSCC). I am also a member of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW).

Recent Conferences

I presented a paper on fostering and diversity to a student conference at the University of Derby in 2007.

Additional Interests and Activities

I've recently worked with the Participation Officer from Derby City Council and Young People in Care to develop a DVD focusing on Effective Communication with Children in Care.
