I teach undergraduate and foundation degree courses in sports coaching and sport development. Before joining University of Derby I have worked in leisure management and the sport industry for over 15 years.
Within leisure I have managed both local and private sector facilities, from council run leisure centres with swimming pools, gyms and catering outlets to private gyms specialising in one-on-one training with a customer base ranging from obese to professional athletes.
While working as Senior Coaching and Education Officer for the national governing body for cycling I developed and oversaw endorsement of British Cycling UKCC level 1,2 and 3 coaching awards, qualifications for people who want to be cycle coaches. The British Cycling department for Coach Education and Development is leading in its field in the UK and in order to develop the coaching qualifications, which were pioneering in terms of endorsements, I have worked closely with Sports Coach UK, Sport England, UK Sport and 1st4 Sport.
As part of my remit at British Cycling I undertook extensive research in cycle coaching and associated disciplines, including production of pilot courses and resources for Track Cycling, Cyclo-cross, Road and time Trial and BMX. I have co-written all major course resources developed by the Coaching and Education Department over the last 5 years. I have also developed a number of DVDs demonstrating coaching techniques to support sports coach course delivery.
In 2008 and 2009 I organised the British Cycling annual Coach Educator Tutor Conferences. As well as chairing and delivering much of the conference I organised high profile guest speakers, including Jamie Staff (Olympic and World Medallist), Rob Hayles (Olympic and World Medallist) Heiko Salzwedel's (Male team pursuit coach), Dan Hunt (Female national endurance coach), Chris Furber (Disability national coach), Grant White (BMX national coach) Chris White and Duncan Locke (both performance analysts from the English institute for Sport).
During my time at British Cycling I forged strong links with the World Class Department, Talent Team, and English Institute of Sport, responsible for the multiple Olympic and world title athletes. These links resulted in incorporating world class athletes and coaches into working groups to develop coaching principles, practices and knowledge bases.
