School: School of Education
Subject Area: Early Years
I teach classes across a range of programmes, from first year undergraduate to Masters level. I have responsibility for the management of the Erasmus exchange programme for Early Childhood Studies, where students have the opportunity to spend a semester in either Belgium or the Netherlands. I am the Admissions tutor for the BA Early Childhood Studies programme - the first point of contact for potential new students and the Pathway Leader for the MA(Ed) in Early Years
Teaching responsibilities
I teach modules on emotional and social development, research with young children, as well as modules on international education and transition. I supervise a number of Independent Studies dissertations each year.
I have developed two new Masters modules. The first explores "Childrens Places", while the other considers the development of the early years workforce.
Professional interests
My professional interests revolve around the process of Transition. Whether this is when a child moves from home to nursery, (or whether it is when an adult decides to come to university), there needs to be an understanding of how the processes are planned and managed. I believe that if this process is effective, it will lead to the development of "resilience" so that individuals can better cope with what life brings them.
Research interests
I have recently carried out an audit of our admissions process to explore the effectiveness of "first contacts".
I regularly visit Belgium and the Netherlands to work with colleagues to develop a better understanding of what it means to be a European educator. As well as hosting an annual visit of Belgian and Dutch students, I organise group visits for our students to these countries.
Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees
