Experience in Industry

After training a the University Hospital of Wales as a medical photographer I worked at Ninewells Hospital University of Dundee then ran my own business and a Medical and Personal Injury photographer in the Bromsgrove and Redditch area for over 12 years before moving to the University of Derby to become Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Biolological Imaging.

Presenting workshops on use of Infrared photography for visualizing tattoos for the Fingerprint Society Seminar in partnership with the National Police Improvement Agency and Derbyshire Constabulary, Ripley, June 11th 2009.

I currently have a number of roles in the University:Programme Leader for the part-time Foundation Degree in Applied PhotographySchool Quality Contact for the School of Art & Design andSenior Lecturer in Forensic Science covering Forensic Imaging and Forensic Anthropology

Teaching responsibilities

I teach across a range of subjects including FdA Applied Photography and BSc Forensic Science/Forensic Science with Criminology where I teach modules in Forensic Imaging, Forensic Anthropology and Medical Forensics.

Professional interests

Forensic, medical, medicolegal, personal injury, and scientific photography. Examples of recent work includes; Medicolegal photographs for a defence solicitor of a prisoner in HMP Winsome Green and close-up photographs and photomacrographs of a chip from a Sinclair C5.

Research interests

Scientific, medico-legal and forensic photography, human identification, history of medicine including: 'History of acromegaly and gigantism' and 'Use of photography in medicine'. Education especially use of technology enhanced learning, learning objects and multimedia.

International Experience

Marketing trips on behalf of the School of Art and Design to Taiwan, China and Java.

Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees

Fellow of Higher Education Academy, Member of the Institute of Medical Illustrators, Registered Medical Illustration Practitioner, Association for Learning Technology, Fingerprint Society. I am on the editorial board of the Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine responsible for the Learning and CPD section.

Additional Interests and Activities

I have been involved in Web Design and E-learning development since 1995 including developing my own personal website, a website looking at the work of my Great Aunt Dorrie Nossiter www.dorrienossiter.co.uk and more recently developing the Digital and Material Arts Research Centre website with John Goto. One of my interactive learning objects was short listed for the Association for Learning Technology and I use interactive technologies to create learning materials for use in many of my modules.

Media experience

December 2009 - The use of infrared photography to see through cover-up tattoos and its forensic applications was on Radio 5 Live and Radio Derby as well as BBC, Central and Sky Local TV. Please see the video clip at www.derby.ac.uk/press-office/unitube/whose-tattoo-is-it-anyway


September 2006 - Mr Punch and Acromegaly, short clips in daily newspapers and interviews on local radio stations countrywide.
