Experience in Industry

I have worked in the public, private and not for profit sectors predominantly in management/business accountant and financial manager positions. I have also worked for a number of differing kinds and sizes of organisations, giving me some valuable insights into different expectations of the role of the accountant, for instance some positions offered a good deal of exposure to marketing projects within the organisations - allowing me to develop appropriate accounting systems and reporting controls.

As an academic I intend to continue to use the experience from these previous roles and from my personal consultancy work and from my experiences of the challenging charity sector to illustrate and contribute to students' experiential learning within their programmes.

Faculty: Business, Computing and Law

School: Derby Business School

Subject Area: Accounting and Finance

Supporting the Faculty and School Vision

I contribute to the faculty vision by ensuring that all of our accounting and finance students experience a challenging atmosphere in their studies. I believe that students should be given the opportunity to develop upon our programmes, and I work alongside my colleagues to ensure that this environment exists. I bring a great deal of my work experience to the teaching environment, and encourage students to challenge themselves. My doctoral studies will seek to help ensure that students comprehend further strategic and ethical requirements expected of them to assure their employability.

Teaching responsibilities

As well as being the programme leader on the undergraduate accounting degree which has large cohorts both in the UK and in Botswana, I teach on a number of our professional and postgraduate programmes. I am module leader on the Enterprise stream modules within the CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) programme as well as teach on the ACCA (Association of Certified Accountants) programme. I also supervise masters' dissertation students in the UK and in Botswana.

Research interests

  • Management accounting in not for profit organisations

My doctoral studies are concentrated on developing a combination of some of these areas with relation to my professional practice.

Additional Interests and Activities

I am keen to ensure that I can contribute to research interests within the subject area of accounting and finance. This department at Derby University has room to develop and to contribute to the wider academic community, and I am keen to help steer the department in this manner. I also feel that students have a great deal to contribute towards this ambition too, and I am therefore keen to continue to be supportive of students' self-development and awareness.
