Latest news
I am really delighted to announce our intention to introduce a single honours degree in criminology. I am currently working towards this with my team and will update you accordingly.
Faculty: Business, Computing and Law
School: School of Law and Criminology
Subject Area: Law
I'm a senior lecturer and the programme leader for Criminology.
Teaching responsibilities
Apart from the course leadership responsibilities, my specialist areas include domestic violence, rape and prostitution with a particular focus on the patriarchal nature of the law within these areas. I'm also keen to develop the area of psychopathy and criminality. Some modules are closely linked to forensic science and criminal evidence and I am particularly interested in teaching the interaction between the two, using real life cases to illustrate how this can sometimes result in miscarriages of justice. I also introduce students to the English legal system, using case law to illustrate the operation of key principles and procedures. This provides students with the necessary underpinning knowledge and skills required as they progress through the course.
Professional interests
I'm a firm advocate of student centred learning. Two of my children have dyslexia and only recently I was also diagnosed with this condition. I'm therefore very committed to identifying students who may also have undiagnosed dyslexia. A really nice part of my job is seeing the dramatic improvement of students once their dyslexia is recognised, as they are provided with the appropriate support and facilities.
Research interests
My research interests include education, domestic violence, rape and miscarriages of justice.
Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees
Since 2002, I have been a member of the Editorial Advisory Group for the Howard Journal of Criminal Justice
Recent Conferences
British Society of Criminology 2008, University of Huddlersfield, Criminological Futures: Controversies, Developments and Debates.
Additional Interests and Activities
I have provided training on the Postgraduate Certificate of Education at The University of Huddersfield. As a former PGCE student, I discovered how to teach students effectively when researching in this area. I explored other countries to learn how other educational systems operated and I discovered that students need to be guided through a number of stages of development. They need to be taught how to learn and to move through the stages from dependent learner to autonomous learner. Using various strategies, I now incorporate this into my teaching here at Derby and the results speak for themselves.
