I was born locally in Burton on Trent many years ago, and on leaving school moved to Birmingham to train as a nurse. On qualification I moved to Derby to work in the Neurosurgery unit and later trained as a midwife. Following a career break to bring up my family I decided I needed a change and came to the University of Derby to study for a combined Degree in Psychology with Biology. I graduated in 1998, worked in schools for a while and then returned to Derby to study for a PhD. I combined studying part time with working as a sessional lecturer for 3 years before becoming a full time member of the department in 2002.

Research interests

For my PhD I studied patterns of performance in Wason's 2-4-6 task, particularly the facilitatory effect of Dual Goal instructions. I am also interested in teaching and learning, particularly online teaching and the student experience

Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees

I am a member of the Cognitive Science Society and the North East Thinking Group.
