I graduated from University College, Oxford in 1983 with a degree in Experimental Psychology. After three years working, I was employed at what was then Plymouth Polytechnic as a research assistant with Dr Graham Turpin on a project concerned with validating the palmar sweat index as an alternative to electrondermal activity for use in clinical psychophysiology. After the post ended I stayed at Plymouth as a temporary lecturer until 1991.
In 1991 I moved to Ipswich and taught at degree level with the Open University and A level at Suffolk College for a year. In 1992 started work as a research worker in the Addiction Research Unit at the Institute of Psychiatry, London. I worked on a project examining behavioural interactions between drinking and smoking with Drs Steven Glautier, Ian Stolerman and Colin Taylor.
I took up a lectureship at Derby in September 1994. In 1998, I became Programme Leader for BSc (Hons) Psychology.
Teaching responsibilities
I am module leader for a first year module on Animal Cognition, a second year module called Brain and Behaviour and the third year option Psychology of Addiction.
Research interests
My research interests include psychophysiology, particularly the psychophysiology of behavioural disorders, human studies of conditioning and the psychology of substance use.
Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees
I am a graduate member of the British Psychological Society; a member of the Psychobiology section of the British Psychological Society; and a member of the British Association for Cognitive Neuroscience.
