Latest news
I am working with Dr Stuart Kirby of the University of Lancashire to promote wider justice practitioner access to criminological theories.
I am working with partners to develop a Gypsy and Traveller Youth Forum in the East Midlands as a national best-practice model; supporting international development in Roma issues with Capt. Gyorgy Makula following increased xenophobia reports, and exploring 'lessons learned' in gang-related criminality using insights from prisoners.

Professional interests
I graduated in English and History from the University of Keele in 1989. I was inspired by the teaching of Francis Doherty and John Eggleston and trained to teach, completing a Cert. Ed. also at Keele. As with all great plans, though, I was offered a job with the Police Service and took it. After working full time for 10 years, including carrying out duties as a policing trainer, I returned to Keele for a research masters in Criminology, researching Plural Policing and Public Consent. I began some visiting lecturing at the University of Derby in Crime and Policy modules. After another 5 years working full time in police management I completed doctoral research at the University of Derby researching Improving Performance in Race and Diversity. I began teaching on the Doctor of Education Programme at Derby and became module leader in Prison Studies and Criminal Justice Systems for ICS, as well as editing criminology distance learning materials and lecturing on Policing and Law programmes at Nottingham. I am now a visiting research fellow and lecturer here at the University of Derby and support the following programmes: Crime and Justice, Criminology and Education (doctoral supervision).
Research interests
My research has looked at justice as a public good and the pressures of commodification and pluralism upon policing by consent. The growth of private security in public places was explored through interviewing MPs, Ministers, security industry reps and senior policing leaders. Other research has looked at the issues facing Romany Gypsies, Irish Travellers and Roma Gypsies in the UK and Europe. This research explored the limitations of training in the justice sector to tackle bigotry and racism and made recommendations to improve professional practice. Key issues identified included the non-reliance on diversity training but rather investing in workplace leadership and performance to enable cultural change. I am now also involved in exploring the causes of youth offending (why some do and why some don't) and effective interventions (what works) as well as intelligence doctrine development in travelling criminality. I am interested in community cohesion, policing by consent and how justice is accessible to diversity and difference within communities.
