Research interests

Fe-57 Mössbauer spectroscopic studies of environmental, geochemical and archaeological materials: These studies include thermo-magnetic transitions in iron-bearing minerals, e.g. pyrrhotite in Cu-Ni ores from high grade metamorphic rocks. The technique provides an excellent method for estimating the degree of polytype intermixing in the mineral. The characterisation of Fe-species in air particulate samples helps to establish the origin of atmospheric corrosion and the conditions favouring its development, especially in urban environments. The third research area of interest is the study of redox processes and oxidation states of iron in pottery sherds and waste materials from ancient bronze-manufacturing sites. The oxidation states, together with data from phase diagrams, can be used as an indicator of kiln atmospheres and, hence, as evidence by which the processes can be reconstructed.
