Experience in Industry
From the textile industry and hotels I moved into the Health Service where I was a senior manager. Since then in my academic career I have delivered customised training to a very wide range of organisations, large and small and including Coors, JCB, Toyota, Briggs, Rolls Royce, Derby City Council, Marley, Derby NHS Trust, Derbyshire County Council.
Faculty: Business, Computing and Law
School: Derby Business School
Subject Area: Enterprise
Supporting the Faculty and School vision
I lead the Logistics, Marketing and Strategy team which, also includes Information Management, Operations Management, Purchasing and Enterprise. These topics are all delivered with a keen focus on employability (either employed or self employment) and in all areas the practical aspects related to the topics are used to bring the subjects to life.
Guest speakers, live projects provided by local employers, visits and contemporary resources are used across the curriculum ensuring students can really see the relevance and the challenges in the workplace of their studies. They experience how a manager has to develop plans, ideas and implementation strategies and also be able to lead and influence people to turn ideas into reality. The development of entrepreneurial skills has particular relevance here.
The complexity of international markets makes the subject areas even more fascinating. Related to this is the growing challenge of sustainability and corporate responsibility. The subject areas are interlinking and the staff expertise provides a fantastic knowledge range.
Teaching responsibilities
My teaching mainly relates to PhD and EdD supervision in Facilities Management, Quality, Enterprise and SMEs. I also enjoy PG and UG supervision on Independent studies and last year found the real business impacts of these studies particularly rewarding.
I Chair the Research Ethics Committee.
Professional interests
Organisational and Management Development
Research interests
My research interests relate to operations management, particularly quality management in developing SMEs. I am developing the knowledge base on the impact of SMEs on the wider economy and how these enterprises can be better supported to achieve even greater impact.
Through the Centre for Entrepreneurial Management, I have supported a wide range of graduate business start-ups as well as other small businesses and this continuous contact with such businesses provides a basis for on going research.
Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees
Fellow Chartered Management Institute
Chartered Manager
Member Institute Consultants
Recent Conferences
A Case of Transformational Change - International Conference on E-learning, Nijmegan University.
Additional Interests and Activities
I have been fascinated at how continuous improvement of quality can be achieved within organisations. I have held various Quality management roles such as OFSTED inspector, Investors in People Assessor, as well as External Examiner roles. Looking at how quality is achieved and embedded in small organisations is a particular interest. If quality can be 'understood' from the start, it becomes core to the organisation and not only builds reputation, but also reduces waste and supports a sound environmental agenda
