Recently won a two year project from Technology Strategy Board, UK which will capture video streams from live cameras and then using machine learning algorithms will process these images in a cloud environment for security and surveillance domains.

Current Activities / Links with Industry

Stream Cloud Project with XAD Communications Limited, Bristol, UK (2012-2014)

The Stream Cloud project (funded by the Technology Strategy Board) aims to develop an end-to-end solution for batch and real-time analysis of video streams using cloud computing. A software library will be developed to exploit the cloud computing potential for extracting and deriving important features from recorded video streams. For large-scale monitoring of objects, the partnership will setup a computing cloud to process video metadata in real time. To reduce video stream processing time and costs, image processing algorithms will be ported on hardware accelerators such as GPGPUs. Intelligent techniques such as machine learning will be exploited to enable users to provide object recognition, search and compare the objects, and track and monitor the objects under a controlled environment. Profiles will be created to find patterns and events or unusual behaviours in the recorded video streams.

I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing and Mathematics at the University. Before this I worked at the Department of Computing, Imperial College London as a Research Associate. I've been working on various collaborative projects with CERN Geneva Switzerland for the last nine years.

My areas of research include Concurrent, Distributed and Parallel Systems (including Grid and Cloud Computing), Distributed Operating Systems and scalable methods to mine large and complex datasets. I've worked on a number of research projects that have been funded by various European, American and Asian funding agencies.

I am an active researcher and have participated in numerous computing schools, meetings and conferences to present my research work. I have more than 55 peer reviewed publications to my credit. Before starting an academic career, I worked for various software multinational companies for around 7 years.

I have been part of the EC funded projects in Grid and distributed systems, Machine learning and data mining such as Health-e-Child (IP, FP6), neuGrid (STREP, FP7) and TRANSFORM (IP, FP7) where I have been dealing with resource management of large scale systems, performance monitoring and optimization, data mining and service orchestration. In addition to this, I recently won a two year project from Technology Strategy Board, UK which will capture video streams from live cameras and then using machine learning algorithms will process these images in a cloud environment for security and surveillance domains.

International Experience

Stream Cloud Project (2012-2014)

The Stream Cloud project (funded by the Technology Strategy Board) aims to develop an end-to-end solution for batch and real-time analysis of video streams using cloud computing. A software library will be developed to exploit the cloud computing potential for extracting and deriving important features from recorded video streams. For large-scale monitoring of objects, the partnership will setup a computing cloud to process video metadata in real time. To reduce video stream processing time and costs, image processing algorithms will be ported on hardware accelerators such as GPGPUs. Intelligent techniques such as machine learning will be exploited to enable users to provide object recognition, search and compare the objects, and track and monitor the objects under a controlled environment. Profiles will be created to find patterns and events or unusual behaviours in the recorded video streams.

Transform Project (2010-2015)

The underlying concept of Transform (funded under the European Commission Framework 7 Programme) is to develop a rapid learning healthcare system driven by advanced distributed computational infrastructure that can improve both patient safety and the conduct and volume of clinical research in Europe. Providing interoperability between different clinical systems, across national boundaries, and integration of distributed clinical systems and research systems is the main focus of Transform.

NeuGrid Project (2008-2011)

NeuGrid is an EC funded (under the European Commission Framework 7 Programme) Grid-enabled data mining and knowledge discovery project for the European neuroscientists to enable the Alzheimer�s disease analysis. NeuGRID aims to provide a new user-friendly Grid-based research e-Infrastructure enabling the European neuroscience community to carry out research required for the pressing study of degenerative brain diseases. In NeuGRID, the collection/archiving of large amounts of imaging data is paired with computationally intensive data analyses. Neuroscientists will be able to identify neurodegenerative disease markers through the analysis of 3D magnetic resonance brain images via the provision of sets of distributed medical and Grid services.

Health-e-Child Grid Project (2006-2010)

Health-e-Child is an EC funded (under the European Commission Framework 6 Programme) project whose aim is to develop and deploy Grid enabled decision support system for the European paediatricians. The project aims to build a Grid-enabled European network of leading clinical centres that will share and annotate biomedical data, validate systems clinically, and diffuse clinical excellence across Europe by setting up new technologies, clinical workflows, and standards. The Health-e-Child project aims at developing an integrated healthcare platform for European Paediatrics, providing seamless integration of traditional and emerging sources of biomedical information. The long-term goal of the project is to provide uninhibited access to universal biomedical knowledge repositories for personalised and preventive healthcare, large-scale information-based biomedical research and informed policy making.

DIANA Grid Scheduler (2004-2007)

The Data Intensive and Network Aware (DIANA) Grid Scheduler project investigated Data driven and Network Aware meta-scheduling approaches. The Scheduler takes into account a cost based mechanism to map jobs against the resources when making scheduling decisions across multiple sites. An extended version of the DIANA scheduling system not only allocates best available resources to a job, but also checks the global state of jobs and resources so that the output of the whole Grid is maximized and no single user or job can undergo starvation. The DIANA is a performance-aware and an economy-guided Meta Scheduler. The DIANA meta-schedulers create a peer-to-peer hierarchy of schedulers to accomplish resource management, since existing scheduling hierarchies are not sufficient for Grid systems due to their inability to change with evolving loads and due to the dynamic and volatile nature of the resources. The DIANA Scheduling Algorithm and its Queue Management mechanism for coping with the load distribution and supporting bulk job scheduling are the novel research contributions. Results indicate that considerable performance improvements can be gained by adopting the DIANA Scheduling approach.

PhantomOS (2005-2009)

This project is attempting to build a Grid Operating System. Despite having made huge progress during the last decade, Grid computing is not as pervasive as has been promised over recent years. This shortfall in use can be traced to obstacles coming from the strong focus on middleware in Grid computing research and on a hitherto particular community of largely scientific and engineering users. This has led to some limitations in existing grid infrastructures in terms of interactive application support, resource discovery in highly dynamic environments and scalable topologies for grids with loosely coupled dynamic clusters. In addition, the infrastructure required in managing Grids and the steep learning curve associated with maintaining contemporary Grid middleware discourages potential users from adopting the Grid. PhantomOS aims at the development of a pervasive general purpose Grid computing platform for both common and existing grid users by converging user-centric computing with eScience-centric grid computing, via a Grid Operating System built on a virtualized infrastructure. Moreover, a two-tier super-peer model based discovery topology is being created to converge centralized grid computing with the decentralized P2P architecture, leading to a potentially high QoS, scalable, self-organizing and fault tolerant Grid.

JClarens (2002-2004)

The Clarens Grid-Enabled Web Services Framework is an open source, secure, high-performance "portal" for ubiquitous access to data and computational resources provided by computing grids. Clarens was developed as part of a wide-area network Grid-enabled Analysis Environment for collaborative analysis of data generated by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN. JClarens has been developed as a Java-based supplement to the Python-based Clarens Web Services Framework developed at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The interoperability between the two implementations has helped to solidify the service APIs for both. It has also enabled Windows servers to host Clarens servers, which were previously only deployable on UNIX/Linux. The JClarens architecture is based on Java Servlet Technology and XML-RPC/SOAP. JClarens and the original Clarens are intended to be deployed as a set of peer-to-peer servers, each complementing the services provided by the other servers. The server-side application environment provides a standard, easy to use framework for developing Grid services, with mechanisms for PKI-based authentication, authorization based on access control lists in the context of distributed virtual organizations.

MAGGIE (2004-2005)

MAGGIE - Measurement and Analysis of the Global Grid and Internet End-to-End Performance - is a collaborative research project by the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) USA and NUST Institute of Information Technology (NIIT). The motivation behind the project was the need for a better and more integrated network performance measurement and Monitoring, considering the increasing amount of computing and networking power in the scientific research community. Its purpose was to integrate numerous network and application performance monitoring tools into a scalable and secure infrastructure providing measurements, analysis and access to data. Most of the monitoring tools being developed, derive their data from the PingER project. PingER (Ping End-to-end Reporting) is the name given to the Internet End-to-end Performance Measurement (IEPM) project to monitor end-to-end performance of Internet links. Originally in 1995 it was for the High Eneergy Physics community, however, this century it has been more focussed on measuring the Digital Divide from an Internet Performance viewpoint. The project now involves measurement to over 600 sites in over 125 countries. The project is still running and new developments have been made by the concerned researchers in the recent past.

GAE (2003-2005)

Grid Enabled Analysis Environment (GAE) is aimed at providing an integrated service oriented environment for physicists to support distributed analysis of physics data from the CMS LHC experiment. A Grid Analysis Environment is a combination of software architecture, network and storage infrastructure, and software collaboration and analysis tools to enable many people to make effective use of Data and Computational computer Grids.. A set of services was developed to provide end users, in particular advanced end users, the ability to get more information about available resources and to gain more control over the execution of their jobs. These services have been written within the framework of a Grid Analysis Environment (Clarens Project), which advocates a web services based architecture to enable interoperability and language-neutral communication between various services. A steering service was developed to provide dynamic and adaptive resource management in a Grid environment. This assumes the Grid as a real-time system and plans to make intelligent decisions strategically in a consistent way, taking into account the changing state of the system. An estimator service allows users and other services to estimate the cost of doing a number of tasks, such as running a job, transferring a file, and accessing a server and thus helps resource brokers and schedulers to make optimal decisions. A job monitoring service enables the steering service (as well as clients) to collect information about the status of running jobs and the resources being used by them, such as CPU usage, amount of I/O performed, and the running executables. Finally, a meta-scheduling service enables users to select best resources taking into account data location, computing power availability and network conditions. The scheduling service uses the features of the other services and follows a P2P architecture. The scheduling service also supports bulk scheduling, policy aware scheduling and is data and network aware.

ESTEEEM : Emerging Sensor Technologies for Effective Environmental Monitoring (2007-2010)

Reliable, high frequency, wide-scale monitoring of the Earth system is important for a number of reasons. Understanding the limits of natural resources that sustain life (such as water and soil) is vital if we are to maintain and enhance quality of life both globally and nationally. In order to better understand the processes that define our land-atmosphere-aquatic ecosystems, the development of simulation models that can be used for scientific, operational and predictive purposes including water resource management, weather forecasting and the impact of climate change is essential. It is crucial to have real-time environmental data when dealing with natural or human induced disasters, such as floods, prolonged droughts, hurricanes, and pollution. Consequently there is a pressing need for reliable and cost-effective mechanisms to remotely gather environmental data on a wide-scale, continuous and non-intrusive basis. The magnitude of this problem demands extensive take-up and deployment of established and emerging technologies that sense and measure key environmental variables through user-friendly tools, which can be configured, deployed and used by application scientists. It is evident that the tools and technologies used for environmental monitoring need to be user-friendly, easy to deploy, widely accessible by application scientists and capable of being exploited across a range of environmental applications. ESTEEM will advance current WSN research by demonstrating the use of sensor-based monitoring and data capture by a "non-technical" user community for a variety of environmental applications; it will bring WSN technology to the desktop for increasing numbers of environmental scientists.

Mobile Computing for e-Science: (2002-2005)

This research project was aimed at making the power of Grid computing available to resource-limited devices such as Pocket PC and Palm. Design and an implementation of a Grid-enabled physics analysis environment for handheld and other resource-limited computing devices were published as one example of the use of mobile devices in eScience. The project implemented a set of physics analysis applications (Root and JAS) for handhelds and optimized them for maximum performance on the handheld devices (by tuning the JVM to fulfil resource constraints). The implementation aimed to provide users of handheld devices the capability to launch heavy computational tasks on computational and data Grids, monitor the jobs� status during execution, and retrieve results after job completion. Users carry their jobs on their handheld devices in the form of executables (and associated libraries). Users can transparently view the status of their jobs and get back their outputs without having to know where they are being executed. In this way, this system is able to act as a high-throughput computing environment where devices ranging from powerful desktop machines to small handhelds can employ the power of the Grid. The results shown in this project are readily applicable to the wider eScience community.

Access Card System for APS (American Payment System) (2002-2003)

An Access Card System was implemented to provide a flexible processing and card management platform, which combines agility and technical design to support the changing demands of the stored value industry. The System is implemented using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and is truly distributed in functionality. By enabling the independent configuration of card parameters including fees and charges, card and transaction limits, service options and branding the system ensures that services can be quickly and easily launched. The system accepts transactions from a diverse range of delivery channels, intelligently switching them to a variety of external networks. The System connects to a variety of devices including point-of-sale (POS) terminals, ATMs, IVR and the Internet. Its architecture isolates the device from the communication protocol layer, resulting in higher reliability and client flexibility. Transactions can be authorized against a local database in a stand-alone mode or through a remote host or an external network.

Real Time Exposure and Loss Monitoring System (1999-2001)

The System was implemented to calculate, control, communicate and monitor the LSE exposure and loss mechanism and implement the administrative and financial policies in real time. Using TIBCO Rendezvous and C++ libraries, a truly distributed, low overhead, low traffic, and almost real time even driven and messaging system was implemented to inform the decision makers about the exposure, loss and other indicators during the trading hours. It provided the capability to calculate the various trading indicators of a particular stock broker and communicate it to financial and managerial decision makers. This also controls the trading limits, loss limits, exposure and other financial limits and effectively enforces the policies so that broker should adhere to these limits.3
