Faculty: Business, Computing and Law
School: Derby Business School
Subject Area: Leadership
Supporting the Faculty and School vision:
My role is to provide leadership for the subject group in ensuring high levels of student achievement, progression and retention, ensuring that teaching is informed by research and scholarship and that we have excellent employer engagement. As Reader in Management I am leading research development in the Business School and leading the development of the School's Research Strategy.
Teaching responsibilities
My main teaching and learning responsibilities are in International HRM, specifically 'Global Talent Management', 'Leading Managing and Developing People', and research methods. I am also involved in postgraduate project supervision and supervising Doctoral students.
Research interests
My main areas of research interest are in relation to leadership development in professional service organisations, the changing nature of professional work, attitudes to CPD and perceptions of employability. During the last year I have been working with Raleigh (the Youth and Education charity) in respect of the leadership developmental aspects of their international volunteering expeditions and how these contribute to individual employability.
Membership of professional bodies and advisory committees
I am a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
Additional Interests and Activities
The HR profession and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development have been a theme throughout my career. My research focuses on how individuals make sense of the changing nature of professional and leadership roles. I have enjoyed my recent work in organisational development and have gained excellent feedback from this. My main leisure interest is sailing: I'm a Royal Yachting Association qualified dinghy instructor, a member of Carsington Sailing Club, and have been involved in volunteering with the Derby Scout Sailing Association for over ten years. My other hobbies include skiing, motor sport and walking in the Peak District.
