Creating your staff profile
These are notes on editing your staff profile at www.derby.ac.uk/staff-search
If you want to add yourself to the internal directory used by Outlook use this http://dir
How to create or amend a staff profile
- First check to see if your profile already exists by searching the staff list. If it does, click on 'Edit this person's details' at the bottom of your profile. Otherwise click on 'fill in this form' at the top of the staff list.
- You need a special username and password - not your normal login. Please email webjobs@derby.ac.uk and ask for "the login to the staff profiles", giving your name, position and phone number also.
Some examples of good staff profiles include:
Tips on creating a good profile
- Your profile is intended to help prospective students and external people see the specialisms and expertise of our staff. It's not just a phone directory - we already have that elsewhere (http://dir). So try to fill out your profile as fully as possible - just putting your name and contact details is not very helpful to people!
- If you are pasting in text from another source eg Word, paste it into Notepad first (found on all computers, usually under Start>Programs>Accessories) and then copy and paste it into the appropriate section. This ensures that our website retains a good accessibility rating and ensures your profile looks professional and consistent with others.
- The staff search searches on name, job title and subject area. So if you leave any of these fields blank it won't display.
- Please write it in the first person eg "I'm an associate lecturer in..." because it sounds friendly and in keeping with our values.
- In general try to bear in mind the amount of text you add in each section and how it will appear on the page. For example, too much text in the publications section and not enough in the other sections, will leave big gaps on the left of the page.
Title, Forename, Surname and Job title
Forename and Surname: You can either use your full name or a contraction ie Stephen or Steve. You can add the shortened version of your name to the keywords at the bottom of the page. You could also add your old name to the keywords if you change it.
Job title: Please try and make this descriptive ie not just 'Lecturer' but Lecturer in English but be aware the maximum number of characters allowed is 120.
Email, Phone number, Room
It's up to you how many of these you fill in, but there should be at least one way of contacting you. Please put your full number, not just the last 4 digits.
Please use the full name of the site you're based at so 'Kedleston Road, S003' not 'KR S003' or just 'S003'.
Personal website
You can add a website that is relevant to your work/research/area of expertise here. However,
- please remember to start the address with http://
- make sure the website is professional and appropriate and doesn't represent a conflict of interest.
Where I work
Make sure you add your faculty in the top box. This is important to make sure you will appear on the faculty web pages.
- Faculty
- School
- Subject Area
- Department.
Photograph
This is optional, if you'd like to add a (suitable, good quality) photograph it needs to be at leat 280 pixels wide.
Recent publications
Please don't add a huge list of publications. Try where possible to add the recent or most relevant ones.
Recent conference presentations
Again, try and select these based on the most up to date ones (within the last two years) and the most relevant.
Is a media friendly expert?
If you tick this box, you will be listed on the press office website as a media contact. This means journalists might contact you to seek your expertise on a particular subject. So while we really welcome new experts, please make sure you've spoken to Simon Redfern in the Press Office before you tick the box. He can advise you on what's involved in being a media friendly expert.
Keywords
These aren't displayed on your public profile, but they are to help your profle get found when people search.
Add words/phrases related to your role/subjects/areas of expertise and which don't appear in either your job title or role description.
* Please note that the updates will not go live straight away as all staff profile requests are sent to web editors first, who will check your entry and then make it live, or ask you to amend it in some way.
