Experience in Industry
After completing my first degree I spent 12 years in Ergonomics consultancy working across all sectors with projects ranging from individual assesments to large scale refurbish ment projects and in environments as diverse as operating theatres and food processing plants. Throughout my subsequent studies I continued to work as an independent sub-contractor on a range of projects. I am currently expanding my commercial activities at Derby now that the MSc programme has been developed.

Professional interests
As a Registered Ergonomist with the Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors, I have a broad interest in the application of ergonomics expertise, methods and approaches to the improvement of work systems. Much of my work has been focused at the 'health' end of ergonomics (musculoskeltal disorders and stress), but I have also undertaken a range of projects looking at optimising human performance and reducing errors. I am currently involved in the field of patient safety.
Research interests
My primary research interest is in chronic musculoskeletal pain. In particular I am interested in what differentiates those that recover from those who do not - with a specific interest in beliefs about pain and associated behaviours. More broadly I am interested in chronic pain and how we can improve sufferers ability to manage their problems and improve their quality of life. I also have a keen interest in how chronic conditions can be managed in the workplace.
