A guide to extended deadlines...

Assignment

You may be aware of the term 'ECF'. This was used when referring to extending deadlines and it stands for Extenuating Circumstances Form. In previous years, if circumstances out of your control meant that you weren't going to meet a deadline i.e. because you were in hospital, you were able to ask your tutor for an extension on your work/exam by applying for an ECF.

This procedure no longer exists and has been replaced with EEC's

Known as Exceptional Extenuating Circumstances (EEC) these have been in place since September 2011 and there are some key differences between the two. The obvious one being the title; note the word 'Exceptional'. We accept that things happen from time to time that means that you absolutely can't get the work done or attend the exam. These are events such as a car accident, hospitalisation, bereavement and natural disasters. Below is a list of circumstances that will not qualify for an EEC:

  • My computer broke/was stolen
  • I don't understand the module
  • I forgot about the deadline
  • I've had trouble revising

Make sure you are 100% sure that your circumstances are exceptional and can be proven by a professional e.g. a doctor because you will not automatically be granted the extension.

The biggest change of all is....

You still need to hand something in on your deadline date

  • If you're applying for an extension for an exam but you're fit to attend the assessment, you must do so
  • If you're applying for an extension on coursework, you still need to submit whatever you've done so far.

Until you've been granted the extension, you will be graded as normal

If you fail to hand in your part-completed coursework or haven't attempted the exam, this will be graded as a 'Non-Submittal' (NS). Therefore, if your application for an extension is denied, this is the grade that will count. If you hand your coursework in after the deadline date, it'll be marked as late.
