There are many ways you can get the skills and experience employers want at University. Opportunities are available for you throughout the university and the Students' Union on a paid or voluntary basis to enhance your prospects of finding the job you want.
» Being mentored by employers

What you get. You will learn how to market yourself, make useful contacts, build relationships, and understand how to make the best use of opportunities which may present themselves, whilst gaining an insight into the world of work.

Why employers want these skills. Effective relationship building is seen as a key skill by many employers. Being able to demonstrate this can add value to any job application.

» Careers sessions

What you get. Exposure to the best ways of writing a CV, preparing for an interview and how best to plan your career.

» Club Captain

What you get. Being captain of any club will throw up challenges. You will gain experience in leadership and decision making, and enhance your organisational skills in areas such as fixture planning.

Why employers want these skills. Employers value all of these attributes as they demonstrate your ability to manage situations and people. If not done well morale and productivity can suffer.

» Course representative

What you get. You will be expected to listen well to others, evaluate facts and focus on solutions. You will enhance your listening skills, accurately assess various pieces of information, and improve your communications skills, through speaking in formal meeting environments.

» Residential Assistant

What you get. Working in your hall of residence with people your own age you'll learn how to be diplomatic and develop conciliatory skills. You will learn to be supportive of your peers and understand issues of diversity.
