The course lecturers are very supportive

My background

"In 2011 I felt a career change was in order and applied to the University of Derby to study BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science. I decided to apply for the course having successfully completed a Biology Access Course (also at Derby) whilst working full time as a Structural Engineer."

The course

"The course encompasses both Sport Science and Sport Study students and in total there are 116 students. The class is a nice mix and includes a good number of mature students. So far I have successfully completed my first term and have really enjoyed the Physiology and Biomechanics modules; and in particular the Physiology practicals that invariably involve a cycle ergometer, which suits my cycling background."

University life

"With regards to my career change I have no regrets and relish interacting with my younger cohorts. However, getting accustomed to the pace of university has taken some getting used to having previously been used to working full time. One benefit of having worked full time is that I have good time management skills, which has helped me to manage the workload.

The future

"It is too early to say where I want to be in two and a half years time but I am determined to enjoy the journey getting there. Hopefully my enthusiasm for studying will not diminish and with hard work I will graduate in 2014 and find a sports based job that suits me best.
