Alex Molloy - BA (Hons) Sport and Exercise Studies graduate
If you're interested in studying a course that's enjoyable, relevant and can be used in a working environment then the University of Derby might just be for you
”Alex studied BA (Hons) Sport and Exercise Studies and graduated in 2010. He now works as Sports Participation Officer for Team Derby at the University of Derby.
How did you decide to do the course?
"After attending one of the university open days, I was keen to achieve a place on the Sports and Exercise Studies Course. I felt that Derby matched my needs and would provide me with the qualification I required to boost my potential, after starting the course I soon realised I had made the right decision".
"The course covered a wide range of topics that were both up to date and relevant, so the skills and knowledge base we had could be applied in a working environment. The range of modules available to students meant there were fewer restrictions on your career aspirations, so post study I was confident in finding employment despite high levels of competition in the job market".
After graduation
"Since completing my Degree I have worked for Derby County Football Club and their Community Programme. Modules such as 'Working with Children' and 'Sport Development' helped me to get employed as a Community Coach working in Schools and local areas representing the Football Club and their key values".
"The experience I gained at Derby County working with professionals around the club helped me develop those skills I had gained on the Sports and Exercise Course".
"The skills required for the job were developed in the Sports and Exercise Course. The advice from lecturers in Modules such as 'Sports Management' and 'Advanced Sports Coaching' provided me with the necessary skills and an understanding that now helps me to develop sporting opportunities for a large volume of people".
What are you doing now?
"I now work at University of Derby for the Sports Department, Team Derby. Team Derby covers everything to do with Sport at University; Sports Teams and Individuals representing the University across the country to Students and Staff that just want to give Sport a go".
"My role as Sports Participation Officer means I now work with National Governing Bodies and Local Organisations to create sessions for our Students and Staff to participate in. These can range from one off Golf Lessons to Weekly Football competitions, anyone can take part".
The future
"Having only been in the job market for two years it's difficult to predict where my future career path will take me. The current Team Derby project is an exciting one and with the department still in its early stages, something I am very committed to".
