“Telling a Shared Story: Online Sibling Support in Coping with Familial Mental Health Conditions”
A seminar at the University of Derby presented by Ryan Lumbar.
Wednesday 28 May 2014, 1pm to 2pm.
Room S110, Kedleston Road, Derby, DE22 1GB.
What the seminar will cover:
The siblings of individuals with a mental health condition can play a crucial role in their recovery, being a useful source of emotional and practical support. However, the emotional strain and family burden caused by the condition can lead to withdrawal of support and even the onset of mental health issues of their own. In this seminar, Ryan Lumber outlines a study that explored the experiences of siblings using online forums and blog posts through online data collection, analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The way in which online blogging and forum posts can reduce isolation and facilitate coping for siblings will be outlined along with implications for supporting siblings to become less isolated and better equipped to cope.
All are welcome, and no booking is needed to attend. Just come along.
