Bare Reality: 100 women, their breasts, their stories
All staff, students, and visitors are warmly invited to this talk by Laura Dodsworth at the University of Derby on Wednesday 21 October 2015, from 4pm until 5pm at Kedleston Road, Heap Lecture Theatre.
Laura will talk about the background to Bare Reality, and share images and extracts from the stories, her conclusions and her own personal transformation. Bare Reality uniquely makes 100 women subject, not object, and will make you reconsider how you think and feel about your body, as well as those of the women in your life.
What the talk will cover:
100 women bravely share un-airbrushed photographs of their breasts alongside honest, courageous and moving stories about their breasts and lives. When we talk about breasts we talk about intimate aspects of our lives as women, including growing up, sexuality, motherhood, breastfeeding, relationships, body image, health, cancer and ageing. The sensitive, beautiful photographs are visually refreshing, maybe even surprising. But through the project, breasts become the catalyst for a personal and powerful conversation about what it means to be a woman.
Women’s bodies have long been adored and worshipped, scrutinised and controlled, but there is a crescendo in noise about women’s breasts and bodies, and the cultural rights attached to them, from No More Page 3 to Free the Nipple, from breastfeeding selfies to celebrities on the red carpet. The time has never been better to take a personal look at our most public private parts.
Women from all walks of life took part in Bare Reality, aged from 19 to 101 years old and sized AAA to K, from various ethnicities and sexual orientations, and from all walks of life, from Buddhist nun to burlesque dancer.
Bare Reality was published in June 2015, and attracted worldwide media coverage including The Guardian, BBC Woman’s Hour, Loose Women, Huff Post, Cosmopolitan.com, Marie Claire, DIVA, and more. The Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of the book reached its funding target in one day and the video has been viewed 1.5m times. Bare Reality is Laura Dodsworth’s first book.
