Claire Doherty - MSc Health Ergonomics

"After working for 12 years as a physiotherapist, predominantly in the field of occupational health I was keen to improve and consolidate my existing knowledge of ergonomics. Studying for an MSc was therefore a natural choice.

I chose the MSc Health Ergonomics because it encompassed most of the areas which I encounter during my working week and was therefore highly relevant.

Further to this the course offered by Derby allowed me to plan my own timetable to study around family life and work because of the distance learning element and the subsequent flexibility. I have found studying completely liberating, and love the course and applying the things I learn.

Fitting in reading has been fairly straight forwards and once you develop the habit of reading on the train or during designated times of the week, it happens naturally!

The level of support has been fantastic both from the course tutors, who are constantly inspiring, and support staff such as the library and distance learning team.

One of the biggest sources of information and support for me (apart from the tutors) has come from the online forum. This has provided a relaxed environment to discuss coursework, learning and research issues or simply for communicating with fellow students which is not always as serious as it might be! I have made some amazingly supportive and interesting friends.

I have funded the course myself, mainly as I am self employed, and the modular payment arrangements make this easily achievable.

I have found studying this course at Derby to be a life changing experience. I have acquired new skills and knowledge, which have increased my confidence and competence at work. It has changed both my perceptions of ergonomics as a discipline and also how it affects every aspect of our lives, either directly or indirectly."
