Meteorite prize winners
The winning children with their families and competition organiser Graham Ensor.
Children were invited to the University to see a meteorite discovered in North West Africa that was formed 4.5 billion years ago weighing 12kg. The event was in response to our Festival of Science which was a huge celebration of science that took place in March 2009.
The children had successfully identified rocks that were meteorites at our Festival of Science as part of a competition run by Gaham Ensor called 'Meteorite or Meteor-wrong?' All rocks had a substantial element of iron and nickel, which helps determine if they are meteorites.
Graham presented the children with their own small meteorites and tektites from Asia, which were formed by a huge meteorite impact on Earth millions of years ago.
Dr Dorothy Satterfield who organised the event said: "The whole Science Festival was aimed at hooking young children's interest in science."
