Geography
Make sure you take advantage of what Derby has to offer, this can only make your student experience better. If I had the chance I would do it all again
”Will Goring, one of our BSc (Hons) Geography graduates.
We've taught Geography for over 40 years here at Derby and we offer the following courses:
- BSc (Hons) Geography
- Joint Honours Geography
- Joint Honours Third World Development
- Joint Honours International Relations and Global Development
Why study our courses?
- We're located on the edge of the small and friendly city of Derby, with all the resources you'll need as a student.
- We're close to some of the most outstanding landscapes of the British Isles, making us a prime location to study the geographical sciences.
- We have enthusiastic and highly skilled staff, who will make your learning at Derby an exciting and challenging experience.
- Our staff are engaged in research, in collaboration with local and international partners; this leading edge work is used to underpin and inspire their teaching.
- Fieldwork in the UK and overseas is an important part of our courses with opportunities to visit the Peak District, Brussels, Morocco, The Gambia and Switzerland.
A caring and supportive study environment
We provide a lot of support for you both in and outside of class. We operate a personal tutor system that puts you in touch with an academic mentor from the very beginning of your studies, who you'll get to know and can go and see about any issues you may have.
"...the ease with which you can to talk to the lecturers, like they are your friends, helped that much more and it really helped me through the course."
Paul, Geography graduate.
Research inspired teaching
All our staff are actively involved in research and consultancy both in the UK and overseas, and we also have two research groups based in the department:
- The Centre for Land Evaluation and Management (CLEM)
- The Human and Physical Environments Research Group (HPERG)
The research undertaken by staff feeds directly into their teaching, so you'll always be kept up to date with current developments in Geography.
Excellent field study opportunities
Field based study is an essential part of Geography. Some of our residential field course opportunities have been acknowledged as world class. Field based study is an essential means by which you can see how theory works in practice and gives you the opportunity to look at the environment around us and see first hand the challenges being faced and then apply your knowledge to seek workable solutions.
"One of the biggest highlights for me was the trip to Morocco where we got to study erosion in the field, enabling us to apply our theoretical knowledge into a real life situation."
Gemma, Geography graduate.
