Our research and consultancy feeds directly into our teaching so that your student experience reflects current trends.

Our Geography staff are actively involved in research projects in both the UK and overseas.

Our research pedigree is well respected, as reflected by the publications in which our research is published. Several organisations have funded research projects, including NERC, Arts & Humanities Research Council, DFID, Bird Life International, the British Council and USAID.

Research areas

Our research interests are diverse and reflect the expertise of our staff. For example:

  • Transport, especially public transport, transport management and transport planning
  • Gender issues, food production and food access
  • Flood and Environmental Risk Assessment
  • Development policy, sustainable development and the impacts of globalisation
  • Climate change and its impacts
  • Public action, workforce development and society strengthening initiatives
  • Quality of life in the slum and squatter settlements in less developed countries
  • Population migrations and their impacts
  • Current, historic and prehistoric influences of communities on landscapes
  • Land degradation, land management, land reclamation and landscape development
  • Public health, sanitation and epidemiology
