”Why Derby?
It took me quite a long time to choose what course I wanted to study at university as I wanted to make sure that whatever I chose was worthwhile and value for money. I'd had an interest in science throughout my time at school, and Derby made an instant impression on me when I attended an open day. I found the course content interesting and appealing, and both the staff and students very friendly and approachable. The amount of hands-on tuition was something that really caught my eye about the course at Derby, and many of the tutors have experience of working within the industry.
The course
The forensic science degree at Derby covers a wide range of areas including both traditional science and forensics/crime scene investigation. This allows for the possibility of a wide choice of future careers. There are a lot of opportunities to use the laboratories and to become familiar with equipment and procedures. As well as more traditional teaching methods, we have also had lectures involving 3D glasses, hanging things from washing lines and creating our own blood spatter using fake blood and a baseball bat. Some classes are shared with students from other related courses, which has given me the chance to meet and interact with new people. The students on my course have also come from a wide variety of backgrounds. As well as starting my course at the same time as other people coming in from doing A levels and college courses, I have friends who have previously worked in lab environments and some who came onto the degree via Access courses. I really feel that I have benefited from other people's experiences in this way.
Study and work
Throughout my time at university, I have had a part time job working evenings and weekends, and have also done some ad hoc work within the university. While at times it has been difficult to balance my university work with my other commitments, I've generally found the work load fairly manageable, with plenty of support in place from staff in case things go wrong. As well as studying and working my part time job, I'm currently a member of two of the societies, and I'm eyeing up a couple of others for the coming year! It's a great opportunity to pursue something you enjoy as well as spending time with people from all over the university.
The experience
Overall, my degree has been very enjoyable, with a lot of elements to hold my interest and it has also introduced me to a lot of new things to investigate and enjoy. The tutors operate an open door policy, so it's really easy to get any help or support you need. I'd absolutely recommend the course and the university to others and I wouldn't change anything about the experience I've had. There are plenty of opportunities to get careers advice, and I've also had the chance to get some work experience in a laboratory environment. The course has allowed me to hone my interests and widen my prospects for a career once I've graduated.
