Dominique Danger Piché - BSc (Hons) Forensic Science with Criminology

Dominique Danger Piche

The many different skills and topics that we study is what makes this course so interesting to me.

What did you do before your degree?

Before my degree I took four years out to travel and try different jobs as I wasn't 100% sure which degree I wanted to study. To help me decide I did two months work experience with the Hampshire Constabulary Scientific Services department to gain real experience in the working world of forensics. I attended many real crime scenes and found my passion for forensic science. I also did an 11 week course in forensic psychology and when I couldn't decide between which area of forensics to study, I found this degree which studies both!

Why did you choose this degree/qualification?

Crime and forensics has interested me since a young age and I wanted to pursue a career where every day at work would be different and exciting and I would use a variety of skills. This degree combines both aspects that interest me; the hands on scientific approach of gathering and analysing evidence, plus the psychology behind crime and criminal behaviour.

What were/are the best elements in your opinion?

The many different skills and topics that we study is what makes this course so interesting to me. Blood spatter, fingerprinting, serology, anthropology and ballistics are a few of my personal favourites.

How would you sum up the experience of studying this course through Derby University?

The University offers a wide range of module choices and has things which other universities don't offer as part of the course, such as ballistics. The staff forensic team are great and make this course even more enjoyable. A lot of personal support is given to students.

How have your studies helped in the development of your career?

I have learnt so many skills and widened my knowledge, not just scientific but also life skills which will prepare me for my future career such as giving evidence in court.

What are your future plans?

My future plans are to get a 1st, then to pursue a career in the ballistics department at MI5, or pursue my forensic science career in the specialist labs in California.
