Darcy Cook - BSc (Hons) Forensic Science
Above all, it is the 'hands on' experimental/laboratory work which I enjoy the most.
”What did you do before your degree?
I worked for 15 years at a Textile Testing Laboratory, which consisted of doing chemical testing, microscope work and report writing amongst many other duties. I started University doing HND Forensic Science and transferred to the 2nd year degree programme after successfully achieving good marks in the 1st year.
Why did you choose this degree/qualification?
I have always been interested in Forensic Science, mainly down to my father being in the Police Force for 30 plus years. With the experience gained from my 15 years laboratory experience, I was accepted by the University to do this course.
What were/are the best elements in your opinion?
I have thoroughly enjoyed all elements of the programme which I have been studying, but above all, it is the 'hands on' experimental/laboratory work which I enjoy the most.
How would you sum up the experience of studying this course through the University of Derby?
I have found the course hard but rewarding at the same time. Because I had been out of the education process for many years it was extremely difficult for me to learn so many different modules at the same time.
I had no previous qualifications in Chemistry or Biology, which is a major part of the course and therefore I was quite a way behind all of the other students, especially those who had come straight from doing their A levels. This said, I knuckled down to learning, and achieved good marks in all subjects. This was extremely rewarding to me, and made me realise that I was capable of exceeding my expectations and could achieve anything with hard work.
How have your studies helped in the development of your career?
The course which I am studying will open many doors to me that were previously shut. I have years of experience in laboratory work and now will have qualifications to back the experience up. I have managed to find some contacts in the Police force during my studies, which hopefully will help my career.
What are your future plans?
My ideal job when I graduate from University would be to work in the Forensic Laboratory at Derbyshire Police Headquarters. If this is not possible due to government cutbacks, I am hoping that the qualification I achieve will allow me to work in various laboratories in the area.
