”Why Forensic Science at Derby?
Before I came to university I studied Biology, Psychology and Law at college. I had always enjoyed science, developing an interest in forensics whilst at secondary school and was excited at the possibility of taking this interest further. I narrowed down my list of potential forensic science courses by only visiting those that were accredited by the Forensic Science Society. Visiting the university on an open day left a very good impression, and the course at Derby was instantly my favourite.
Your time at Derby
The course attracts a wide range of students, all different ages and from different backgrounds, which is a very positive thing as you get to work with a good mix of people, all sharing an interest in the same subject. Working together as a team was promoted throughout the course via group work assessments, which I think has prepared me well for the world of work. The forensics staff at Derby is really what makes the course. As well as being great lecturers, they have also offered great advice and support whenever I have needed it, course related or not. They have also helped me see my potential and encouraged me to push myself, which I am very thankful for!
The course
The best element of the course was the practical based learning, which we had plenty of. I thoroughly enjoyed the research element of the course in the final year, which really improved my ability to work independently. For many students though the best part of the course is the mock crime scenes, where we get dressed up in all the protective gear and document and collect evidence from the crime scene. It is a great experience and the court appearance which follows this in second and third year prepares us very well. However, my favourite module was no doubt the Forensic Entomology module, an area that is becoming a growing passion of mine. I also enjoyed the Medical Forensics module, and thought that going to watch a live post-mortem was a fantastic opportunity, even if it was a little stomach churning!
Through studying for this degree I developed a keen interest in insects and their application in forensic science, and knew that it was something I would love to take further. I have very recently completed an internship at Derby, carrying out fieldwork on behalf of Dr Kate Barnes as part of her research. This was a great opportunity to gain more research experience and it was in my favourite area so I really enjoyed it!
Extra-curricular activities
Whilst studying at Derby I also took on some extra work. This started with working as a student ambassador, representing the university at events and open days. I had a lot of fun working these events and it really helped develop my confidence. It also motivated me to get involved in more things like this, which led me to then become a student advocate. This work was a step up and required me to deliver external talks on forensic science, to both school and college students. This usually involved a presentation and a practical and was a bit of a daunting task at first! However, after a number of visits and taster sessions I really began to enjoy it and have found that teaching is now something I would really like to do in the future!
Future plans
My dream is to have a career in forensic entomology; however this is a very big dream! My first step is to gain an MSc in Entomology, which I begin in September. I then hope to gain a job where I can carry out more entomological research. Later on in my career I would also like to incorporate some teaching, and enthuse new generations of entomologists!
